Articles on Donald Judd mention how he liked to differentiate between his furniture design, architecture and “art”. Here, at Marfa Texas, all of these worlds collide. The experience here in the Artillery shed is this. Redesigned, the building accommodates the specific objects to allow them intense amounts of sun exposure, their reflective surfaces charged with receiving and projecting light and shadow. In scale these objects reference as furniture, as a series of desks but their surfaces in the sun would yield them as un usable. In this fashion Judd has created objects that can just be, to live their own lives without human expectations and hover in a place of close but not quite what we expect. A meter that reminds us that we live in a narrative and our expectations keep us there.
